School
for Indigenous Bribri Indians
Alto Katsi, Talamanca Costa Rica
Every Child Deserves a Decent School!
Imagine an entire indigenous community.
Imagine the
children in that community wanting to go to school, but not having more
than a shack with one standing wall!
Imagine people
wanting to build their own school, but just not having any money!
This is a tough
reality and hard to imagine, but it’s happening in the mountains of the
Bribri indigenous
territory in Costa Rica.
This is the old school:

The old simple construction
is falling apart. What looks like a wall is what separates the area
where the kids receive the lessons and what is meant to be a storage
area. The restroom was destroyed by the heavy rains and winds. There’s
no running water at the school, not to mention a dining area for the
kids who desperately need some nutritional attention as well.
A group of volunteers from Costa Rica, Europe, US, the UNA
University of Costa Rica together with the LINK AMERICAS Foundation
have started the Bribri School Project to support the effort to build a
school. With your support we can raise the $10, 000 that will make a
difference in these children's lives.
In Costa Rica the Indigenous territory of Talamanca covers the largest
remaining natural forest in Central America. It is the home of five
Indian tribes. In 1983 the Talamanca Mountains and their Indian
reserves were designated a Biosphere Reserve under the UNESCO Man &
Biospere Programme.
The people from Alto Katsi, a community with about 30 families and 23
children in school used to work in the plantain fields in the area. Now
they are all out of work because of the flooding.
Your donation is needed so
they can build a new indigenous
school two classrooms, an eating area, a bathroom, and if at all
possible with locally produced energy, a computer connected to the
world! Even the smallest donations are very, very, very
welcome; your donations can make a big difference in many lives. How
great would it be to make it possible for an entire community to have
their own school?
The wood for the school will be cut locally and all the other material
needs to be transported to Alto Katsi. The following pictures give you a
good impression of the way of transportation. They were taken in
February 2009 by a group of volunteers from France and the Red Cross,
Chapter San Ramon de Alajuela of Costa Rica, delivering donated clothes
and school materials to the children of Alto Katsi.

Please support
this rewarding project for the children of the Bribri
community in Alto Katsi.
They deserve the education to build a future in a sustainable
environment and preserve their rich culture going back long
before Christopher Columbus came to Costa Rica on
September 18, 1502.

Please, don't
wait. You can donate
right here.
